Values
I've practiced cardiology for 36 years, but I got into politics 17 years ago when a patient broke down in tears during my exam. The patient was a 55-year-old man who had just been laid off from Dan River Mills. He said he had worked there for 30 years doing the same job in the same part of the plant. Now that he'd been laid off, he had no idea how he would make a living. He was still too young to retire, but nobody wanted to hire and train a 55-year-old mill worker.
I treated his hypertension and heart disease, but I couldn't give him what he really needed: a new job.
I ran for Danville City Council to take care of people like that man. I believe that we need to look out for everyone in our community, especially the most vulnerable. The challenges that we face are systemic, and so the solutions– the real and effective solutions – have to be as well. What I found after 17 years on the Danville City Council is that the things we do to take care of our most vulnerable people help everyone. That good governance is built on truthfulness, compassion, diligence, and listening.
Now I'm running for the VA House of Delegates District 49 because, for too long, Southside representation in Richmond has lacked those values. Beholden to partisan politics, our leaders have consistently allowed Southside to be left behind. The cost of living is too high. They've allowed our hospitals to be sold to private interests, allowed wealthy landlords to exploit our housing crisis, and attempted to cling to power by dividing us instead of listening to what the people need.
What the people need is reliable public services and economic opportunities, and for the government to keep the cost of living low.
It's not complicated.
